Almgren's competitor banned for two years more

The Swedish runner Andreas Almgren avoids the competition from Mohamed Katir for a good while ahead. The Spaniard's suspension is extended from two to four years.

Deficiencies in the residence reporting led to a two-year ban for the long-distance runner. Now it turns out that he also falsified documents and the penalty is increased by two years.

It is the International Athletics Federation's integrity unit, AIU, that is tightening the ban, writes SVT.

Katir took silver on 5,000 meters at the World Championship in Budapest 2023 and bronze on 1,500 meters at the World Championship in Eugene 2022.

Katir cannot compete again until February 2028. AIU wanted him banned from March 2023, which would have deprived him of the World Championship silver, but the disciplinary board went against the request, according to Reuters.

"Katir was found to have falsified travel documents (itinerary, boarding card, and booking confirmation) in an attempt to mislead investigators", writes AIU in a statement.
