Iran's former hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is once again targeting the presidency. He has registered as a candidate in the election to find a successor to Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash.
Ahmadinejad was president between 2005 and 2013. When he was re-elected in a disputed election in 2009, it led to widespread protests. As president, he openly challenged Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who advised Ahmadinejad not to run in the 2017 election, as it would lead to polarization and harm Iran. And when he tried to run in 2021, it was blocked by the authorities.
The election will be held on June 28.
