The warring parties in Sudan's civil war have agreed to establish safe routes into the country for deliveries of emergency aid.

"These routes must continue to be kept open and secure so that we can get help to (the region of) Darfur and curb the famine", reads a statement from the mediators at the ongoing talks on a ceasefire in Switzerland.

The war between Sudan's government forces and the paramilitary group RSF (Rapid Support Forces) has raged since April 2023. Both sides have been accused of brutal war crimes and blocking humanitarian aid.

The conflict has triggered what is described as the world's largest humanitarian disaster, where around 25 million people – over half of the country's population – face famine.
