The EU Commission presents new guidelines to protect young people on the internet – including an app for age checks.

The new app will be tested jointly by Denmark, France, Greece, Italy and Spain.

–We are one step closer to ensuring that our children can have access to a safe online environment, says EU Commissioner Henna Virkkunen at a press conference in Brussels together with Denmark's Digital Minister Caroline Stage.

The latter, however, wants to go even further.

–I will immediately investigate the national possibilities of setting an age limit for access to social media, with the goal of becoming a pioneer country, says Stage in Brussels.

Denmark has promised that during its ongoing half-year as presidency country in the EU Council of Ministers to push for a general age limit throughout the EU as well.

Monday's guidelines include measures against bullying on the internet and recommendations that minors' accounts should be private by default.
