The only accommodation for visitors at North Rim in the Grand Canyon has burned down. So have, among other things, a visitor facility, a gas station and some staff residences. In total, 50 to 100 buildings have been destroyed, according to park manager Ed Keable.
Two fires are raging near North Rim. The fire that devastated the buildings has been named Dragon Bravo and started with a lightning strike on July 4. A week later, it had grown to 20 square kilometers in size due to high temperatures, low humidity and strong gusts of wind, according to the rescue service.
There are no reports of personal injuries.
The park is visited annually by millions of people. Most of them go to the other side of the park, called South Rim.
