According to the district court, the sentence for the murder is 18 years in prison. However, since the 18-year-old suffers from a serious mental disorder - and was 17 years old at the time of the murder - the sentence will be forensic psychiatric care with special probation.
Both of these circumstances mean that it cannot be a sentence measured by the crime's sentence value, says Chief Judge Peter Broberg to TT.
Instead, you have to make another choice of sentence. In this case, forensic psychiatric care.
Disappeared in March
It was primarily severe blunt violence to the head that caused the girl's death.
According to the district court, the 18-year-old had what is called an indifference intent. That is, he was aware of - and indifferent to - the risks that the girl would die from the violence he inflicted.
It was in March this year that the girl disappeared. She was found dead four days later near her school. The suspect was arrested the same day.
The case has received significant attention and evoked strong emotions in Mark. At the same time, criticism of the police has been harsh, including that it took several days before a special incident was initiated.
Tracked the wrong phone
An internal investigation also found that the police did not take into account the vulnerability that the girl's disability entailed. Furthermore, the wrong phone was initially tracked, which meant that the police were looking for the girl 30 miles away.
The 18-year-old man is also convicted of weapons offenses since he had a modified tear gas pistol in his home. However, this crime has nothing to do with the murder.
He was also suspected of aggravated rape - but is acquitted on that point. In the verdict, the district court writes that it cannot be ruled out that the girl participated in sexual acts voluntarily.
