First, 100-year-old veteran Harold Terens from World War II was honored at the 80th anniversary of D-Day in northern France. Later, he married his new love - 96-year-old fiancée Jeanne Swerlin.
The wedding took place to the tune of the hit song "I will always love you", "Ave Maria" and bagpipes and was held in the town of Carentan-les-Marais in Normandy. Several guests wore military uniforms.
In the evening, a state banquet awaits, with French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Joe Biden for the newlywed couple.
The bride and groom, from the US, are based in Florida and the wedding in Normandy will therefore be followed by a legally binding ceremony at home.
Harold Terens was awarded the French Legion of Honor by President Emmanuel Macron in 2019.
