In Berlin, 30 police officers and a firefighter were injured after being attacked with mainly fireworks. A large number of police officers from across the country had been relocated to the capital and 400 people were arrested in the violent incidents.

Explosions from powerful, illegal fireworks have also caused extensive damage in two city districts and injured several people, some seriously. According to the city's fire department, powerful detonations have damaged house facades and shattered many windows. A total of 36 apartments are currently uninhabitable.

Germany's Interior Minister Nancy Faeser says that the perpetrators will be "prosecuted and punished with utmost severity".

In Munich and Cologne, police have also been attacked with fireworks, reports the German media company ARD. Five people in the country have also died in fireworks accidents during the New Year's weekend and several have been injured.
