Vattenfall is moving forward with the next step in the plans for new nuclear power at Ringhals, the state-owned energy giant announced in a press release.

Following an evaluation of six suppliers of so-called SMRs (small-scale reactors), the company has moved forward with British Rolls-Royce SMR and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy from the USA.

"Selecting a few possible SMR suppliers is one of several steps in the continued work on new nuclear power on the Väröhalvön peninsula at Ringhals," says Desirée Comstedt, head of new nuclear power at Vattenfall, in the press release.

Vattenfall states that it will now analyse the two remaining suppliers.

However, Vattenfall has still not decided whether the company will build SMRs or large-scale nuclear power. The suppliers involved in the process of potentially building larger conventional reactors are American Westinghouse, French EDF, and South Korean KHNP.

"We have not made a technology choice yet," says Desirée Comstedt.

"The goal remains to have a first new reactor in operation on the Väröhalvön peninsula at Ringhals during the first half of the 2030s," the company writes further.
