Women's rights are regressing in a quarter of all countries in the world, shows a report from the UN agency UN Women. In just three years, conflict-related sexual violence has increased by 50 percent.

Despite certain progress having been made regarding women's right to education and family planning, a girl or woman is killed by a partner or family member every tenth minute, the report states.

"The weakening of democratic institutions has gone hand in hand with the backlash against equality," says UN Women.

"Globally, women's human rights are under attack. Instead of integrating equal rights, we see how misogyny is being integrated," says UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a statement.

Among other things, the covid-19 pandemic, global conflicts, climate change, and emerging technologies such as AI are pointed out as new potential threats to equality.
