It is a symbolic gesture after the USA has vetoed a similar resolution in the UN Security Council.
The resolution calls for an "immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire" and "immediate release of all hostages".
The vote count was 158–9, with 13 abstentions.
Gaza no longer exists. It has been destroyed. History will be the harshest critic of those who do not intervene, said Slovenia's UN ambassador Samuel Zbogar to the assembled before the vote.
Algeria's deputy UN ambassador Nasim Gaouaoui was on the same track.
The price of silence and failure in the face of the Palestinian tragedy is very high and will be even higher tomorrow, he said.
The General Assembly has also adopted a resolution to support the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa). The vote count was 159–9, with 11 abstentions.
UN General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, but they reflect the opinions of the world. It is not possible to veto in the General Assembly.
Israel and close allies of the USA were among the countries that voted against the resolutions.
Today's vote is not a vote of sympathy. It is a vote of complicity, said the Israeli ambassador Danny Danon in connection with the voting.
