Thus, the centrist politician Bayrou, who leads a minority government, risks having to leave after only nine months on the job.

The far-right party National Assembly and the green Ecologists have already stated that they lack confidence in Bayrou, and the socialist parliamentary group will, according to representatives, "with all probability" vote against the government.

The background is Bayrou's struggle to reduce the country's large national debt, which he wants to do with a number of unpopular austerity measures. He proposed in July, among other things, that two of France's eleven public holidays be abolished and a stop to expenditure increases for, among other things, pensions and healthcare.

Bayrou became prime minister in December last year after his predecessor Michel Barnier was dismissed in a vote of no confidence. Bayrou himself survived a similar vote in January this year, but if he were to be dismissed now, President Emmanuel Macron would be forced to find and appoint a seventh prime minister since he took office in 2017.

Macron has, according to Bayrou, agreed to convene the National Assembly on September 8 for the vote.
