Uganda is to start vaccinating against Ebola to try to prevent an outbreak of the feared disease in the capital city of Kampala.

The plan is to administer over 2,000 doses of the vaccine. The vaccine has not yet been approved against the Sudanese variant of Ebola that has affected Kampala. However, work is underway to expedite the process to enable its use.

Earlier in the week, it was announced that a nurse in the city had died from Ebola. It is the first confirmed death since the previous Ebola outbreak in 2023.

Ebola is transmitted through bodily fluids. Common symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding. The mortality rate has been estimated to be 50-90 percent.
