Several of the fires that have ravaged parts of southern Europe are now under control.

In Martigues, near the major city Marseille in southern France, a forest fire broke out during Thursday evening. About 1,000 firefighters worked to combat the fire and during Friday afternoon, French authorities announced that the fire was under control. The fire covered an area of 240 hectares and about 100 people were evacuated from the area. It is unclear when they can return.

Also, the large forest fire that raged outside Spain's capital Madrid is under control. Residents in communities between Madrid and the city of Toledo were evacuated and authorities urged people to stay indoors and use face masks.

While the fire raged, both smoke and ash could reach all the way to Madrid, but on Friday, the sky was clear again in the Spanish capital.
