The German Ministry of the Interior says in a statement that 81 Afghan citizens, all men convicted of crimes, are being deported with the help of Qatar.

The UN demands an "immediate stop" to the deportations, especially considering that some may risk persecution, arbitrary detention or torture, according to spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani.

Germany's Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has promised a tougher line on migration issues and when he took office in May, he among other things deployed more border police.

In the end of last summer, a first group of convicted Afghan criminals was deported from Germany.
