Britain has on Friday introduced sanctions against the Russian military intelligence service GRU, as well as 18 named agents who are accused of "spreading chaos and disorder" on the orders of Russia's President Vladimir Putin.
"GRU's spies are driving a campaign to destabilize Europe, undermine Ukraine's sovereignty and threaten the safety of British citizens", says Britain's Foreign Minister David Lammy in a statement.
Lammy also emphasized that Russia's hybrid threat and aggression will never "break our determination".
The country's Prime Minister Keir Starmer has together with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron previously announced that they want to see new sanctions against Russia to secure a ceasefire with Ukraine.
"We clearly need something new. Something that can affect the pressure on the Russian economy", said Macron after a meeting with Starmer earlier in July.
