Two people have been shot dead and several injured in a shooting at a festival in a park in the city of Round Rock in Texas, says local police at a press conference according to ABC News.

Further individuals have been taken to hospital and are being treated for "potentially serious" injuries, according to the rescue service. Among the victims are two children, says a hospital spokesperson.

According to the police, a fight broke out between two people and one or more individuals pulled out a weapon and opened fire. The two fatalities died at the scene and do not appear to have been the ones who started the fight.

"It's an ongoing operation and the investigation continues. Please, stay away from the area", wrote the police in Round Rock on X shortly after the incident.

The shooting occurred during the celebration of Juneteenth, the emancipation of the last slaves in Texas, which was being celebrated in the park over the weekend. The celebration was organised by a local non-profit organisation together with the municipality. A concert was to be held in the park, the shooting occurred in an area with market stalls near the stage.

Round Rock is located north of the state capital Austin.
