Tunisia's President Kaïs Saïed emerges victorious from the presidential election with 90.7 percent of the votes, according to Tunisian authorities.
His closest challenger, businessman Ayachi Zammel, received 7.4 percent of the votes after having spent most of the campaign period in prison and being sentenced to several prison terms for election-related crimes.
Saïed's high vote count is a reflection of his supporters participating in Sunday's election, while the majority of his opponents chose to boycott it due to several of Saïed's opponents being imprisoned, along with journalists, opposition activists, and lawyers.
Saïed has been Tunisia's president since 2019. The election was the country's third since the Arab Spring in 2011, when protests for "bread, freedom, and dignity" led to the overthrow of the then-dictator Zayn al-Abidin Ben Ali.
