Abdellatif Mekki, prominent Tunisian opposition leader, is being treated for serious burns after an acid attack, according to his party.
Mekki, a former health minister who made an unsuccessful attempt to challenge President Kaïs Saïed in the October election, is said to have been attacked outside his home. According to a statement from his party, he suffered injuries to his neck, eyes, and face.
Prior to the election last month, Saïed, who has become increasingly totalitarian since taking office in 2019, was accused of trying to stage a victory. Several opposition candidates, journalists, and regime critics were arrested.
