The past day has seen five people, including two children, die due to malnutrition, the authorities write on Telegram.
Thus, 100 children have died due to hunger and malnutrition. A total of 117 adults are reported to have died for the same reason. The statistics are based on information from hospitals in the Gaza Strip.
Thousands malnourished
The figures are difficult to verify, as international journalists are not allowed to report from Gaza. The activities of aid organizations are also severely restricted. However, international organizations have been warning for weeks of an imminent famine disaster.
In July, at least 12,000 children under the age of five in Gaza showed symptoms of acute malnutrition, the World Health Organization, WHO, warned this week.
The people of Gaza have "limited access to basic services, have been affected by repeated displacements and are now suffering from a blockade of food", said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the time.
Blockade in the spring
The hunger crisis escalated after Israel introduced a nearly total blockade of aid to Gaza in March. After about two months, Israel opened up to allow limited amounts of aid to be let in – but it is far from enough for the population of over two million. According to Oxfam, there are no longer any stocks of humanitarian aid held by international organizations within Gaza.
