Trump's strategy: Relying on the extended family

Some become ambassadors to exciting places. Others hope that the future President of the USA, Donald Trump, will have them close to him, as allies in Congress. Just like in the previous term, the Republican is handing out top jobs to several family members.

It's something I would seriously consider... Yes, I would absolutely consider it.

Donald Trump's daughter-in-law Lara Trump, outgoing vice chairman of the Republicans, doesn't hide her interest when news agency AP asks if she can imagine taking over Marco Rubio's seat in the Senate. Which is something that is being speculated about in the USA.

Decisive role

Florida Republican Rubio has been nominated by Trump for the post of Secretary of State. If he is approved, which everything indicates, it is up to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to appoint a successor. Trump has, according to media reports, recommended his son Eric Trump's wife Lara.

The former TV producer Lara Trump was elected in February as vice chairman of the Republicans. As such, she was decisive for his election victory: The party recruited over 20,000 volunteer workers and a large number of lawyers "to ensure election integrity".

If you think you can cheat, we'll find you, she warned at a campaign meeting in Georgia shortly before the election.

Like most in Donald Trump's circle, Lara Trump has bought into his false claims of electoral fraud in 2020.

Out into the world

Now a new term is approaching and the opportunity to implement the Make America Great Again (Maga) agenda that Trump won the election on. Ahead of the inauguration, the future president is handing out high posts in the extended family.

It's to be expected – personal relationships, family loyalty, connections play a major role for him, says a Republican lobbyist, who wants to remain anonymous, to The Hill.

Daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, who during the first term were high-profile advisors in the White House, have however backed away from such roles citing family life. But Kushner is expected to be an unofficial advisor and Trump has nominated his father Charles Kushner as ambassador to France.

Another son-in-law who gets a heavy assignment is the youngest daughter Tiffany Trump's. She is married to Michael Boulos, whose father, the wealthy Lebanese-American businessman Massad Boulos, has been appointed Middle East advisor. And Kimberly Guilfoyle, former TV anchor and long-time fiancée to son Don junior, is being sent to Greece as ambassador.

Trump's youngest son Barron will live in New York during the term, where he studies. But he is already considered to have contributed to his father's successes by getting Trump to do interviews in a number of podcasts – appearances that are considered crucial for getting young men to notice him.

Donald Trump will be installed as the 47th President of the USA on January 20. The 78-year-old Republican was also president between 2017 and 2021, but failed to be re-elected in 2020.

Unlike other presidents, Trump did not have previous experience as an elected politician or military officer when he moved into the White House. He was a businessman.

Born in Queens, New York, Donald Trump has an economics degree with a focus on real estate from the University of Pennsylvania. He inherited properties from his father and built an empire with a focus on, among other things, hotels and golf courses.

Donald Trump is the father of five children: Donald junior, Ivanka, Eric, Tiffany, and Barron.

In 2005, he married for the third time after divorces from Ivana Trump and Marla Maples. His current wife is Slovenian-American Melania Trump.
