According to the newspaper, it may happen as early as Thursday.
Trump is expected to then order the newly appointed Education Minister Linda McMahon to dissolve the department she leads. In a draft, the minister is instructed to take all necessary steps – as far as the law permits – to "facilitate the closure of the Education Department".
"The experiment of controlling American education through federal programs and dollars – and the irresponsible bureaucrats that these programs and dollars support – has failed our children, our teachers, and our families", the draft reads, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
According to American law, a 60-vote majority in the Senate is required to completely dissolve the department. Trump can, however, order extensive cuts to projects and staff without formally closing down the department.
