The deductions for travel to and from work increased by over six billion kronor to nearly 30 billion in 2023 compared to 2022, reports Ekot. The increase is expected after the mileage allowance for petrol- and diesel-driven cars was raised from 18.50 kronor to 25 kronor in 2023.
Around 900,000 people made travel deductions for 2023, but it is not clear how many received mileage allowance and how many received travel deductions for public transport.
The Riksdag passed a new system in the summer of 2022 with a tax reduction based on distance regardless of mode of transport. However, after the election, the new bourgeois government, together with the Sweden Democrats, pushed through that the old system would be retained, but that the mileage allowance would be increased.
