Canada Ends Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods

Canada is abolishing the so-called retaliatory tariffs on a long list of products from the USA, announces Prime Minister Mark Carney. It is seen as an outstretched hand towards President Donald Trump.

A long range of American goods are thus exempt from a customs duty of 25 percent, but only the goods covered by the previously applicable North American free trade agreement USMCA.

Among the goods affected are mentioned orange juice, wine, clothes and motorcycles.

Canada, on the other hand, retains 25 percent import duties on American steel and aluminum products and cars, what Carney calls "strategically important sectors".

The decision means that the punitive duties between the USA and Canada are more in line with each other.

Carney says that he wants to protect the relatively low duties that Canada and the USA have against each other and motivates the decision with a hockey parallel.

There are moments in an important match, and this is an important match, when you need to throw your gloves and send a message. That part we have done. But there will also be moments when you want to pass and score. That's where we are now, he says.

According to Carney, this is also done in anticipation of the USMCA between the USA, Mexico and Canada being reviewed soon. A negotiation that can take 6-18 months to complete, says Carney.
