Tourism to USA Declines as Travelers React to Trump's Policies

Tough customs duties. Mass layoffs of government employees. Threats to allies. President Donald Trump's controversial policy risks hitting tourism in the USA hard. Outraged individuals who choose to avoid traveling to and within the USA can cost the tourism sector 64 billion dollars in revenue this year.

The assessment is made by the consulting firm Tourism Economics and includes both domestic travel and travel from other countries. The reasons for refraining from travel are both economic and political: concerns about recession and inflation, as well as dislike of Trump's politics.

Visits from abroad are expected to decrease by 5.1 percent in 2025, compared to last year, according to a report published by Tourism Economics at the end of February. Since then, the situation has worsened further, and the decline is expected to be greater.

"A situation with the polarizing Trump administration's politics and rhetoric ... will deter travel to the USA," notes Tourism Economics.

The US Travel Association warned in early February of decreased travel from Canada. Canadians are the largest foreign visitor group in the USA, with 20.4 million travelers last year. In New York, the effect is already noticeable, with Canadians canceling or stopping their search for hotel rooms and event tickets, according to the organization NYC Tourism.

We don't see anything like that from the UK or Europe yet, it's too early. We're following the development very closely, says Julie Coker, head of the city's tourist organization.
