"There is nothing to celebrate," the students announced in a statement when they held a protest march through Belgrad late on the last day of the year, at the same time as an official New Year's celebration with music and performances organized by local authorities was taking place.
Demonstrations also took place in the cities of Nis and Novi Sad. In Belgrad and Nis, a minute of silence was held at midnight. While fireworks were being launched in the background, the demonstrators stood with bowed heads in silence, to honor the victims of the accident.
It was during rush hour on November 1 that a concrete roof on a newly renovated station in Novi Sad collapsed. 15 people, the youngest six years old, died.
The accident triggered protests across Serbia, as many believe that corruption and insufficient oversight in construction projects partly caused it. 13 people, including the country's former transport minister Goran Vesic, have been charged.
