According to the survey by Novus, four out of ten have no idea how much they can expect to get in pension when the time comes.

A large proportion have stated that they can manage on 80 percent of their salary, but few expect their pension to actually deliver that.

There is a large gap between needs and expectations, and it is consistent regardless of age, says Skandia's pension economist Mattias Munter.

The opinion survey was conducted on behalf of the pension company Skandia and has sought answers to how people view their retirement and what expectations they have.

It is important that more people understand how to build a pension and how to plan, so that more people become satisfied, says Munter.

Retirement Age

Something that plays a major role in the size of the pension is the retirement age. It is also a highly topical issue in light of the new retirement age for pensions – 67 years – which will come into effect next year. And even though the norm for many is still 65 years, Mattias Munter sees a development where more people work longer.

He also means that the retirement age has become more flexible and that the transition between working life and retirement is no longer as abrupt as before. The number of "jobbonärer" who combine pension and work can be counted in hundreds of thousands.

This is a very clear trend and can make a big difference for the economy. Approximately 6,000 kronor more per month for private employees and around 4,000 kronor more per month for publicly employed, says Munter.

Lifestyle Choices

Extending working life can also become necessary for those who realize that their pension will not be as high as they had wished. Something that can be avoided if one wants to – through planning.

The earlier you start, the greater the opportunity you have to influence and compensate for lifestyle choices you make, such as longer studies or part-time work, says Munter.

He emphasizes that the first thing you need to do is to get an overview. Something that is relatively easy in Sweden by logging in to minpension.se. Then you can take the next step and do something active.

The fundamental thing is to work as much full-time as possible and ensure that you have occupational pension, or save yourself in a similar way. If you then have your own long-term savings that can be used for pension, then you have done the most important thing, says Mattias Munter.

The survey was conducted by Novus on behalf of Skandia.

A total of 1,054 web interviews, with randomly recruited interviewees, were conducted during the period 23–30 January 2025.

The results of the survey show, among other things, that:

Nearly half do not believe that their pension will cover living expenses

Nearly three out of ten do not know how many percent of their salary they need to live as they want

Every fourth person states that they need 80 percent of their salary as a pensioner

Four out of ten do not know how many percent of their final salary they expect to get in pension
