Donald Trump used 40 seconds of the hit song from 1983 in a commercial film that was published on Twitter, now X, in 2020. The film got 13.7 million views before it was taken down by Twitter.
Now, a federal judge in New York has ruled that Donald Trump violated Eddy Grant's copyright. This means the case can proceed and the pop star can claim damages, according to NME.
"Grant believes that the ruling will help others in their fight against unauthorized use of their music," says the artist's lawyers in a statement.
Eddy Grant is just the latest in a long line of artists who have wanted to stop Donald Trump from using their music for political purposes.
In recent times, big names like Abba, Beyoncé, and Celine Dion have publicly expressed their discontent, while White Stripes and heirs to Isaac Hayes have even gone to court to stop Trump.
