An engineer fell from a great height and died from his injuries. Now, the Royal Opera will pay a corporate fine of three million kronor, reports P4 Stockholm.

Fredrik Lindgren, CEO of the Royal Opera, tells TT that the company "accepts the decision".

According to the prosecutor, the accident could have been avoided with "a high degree of probability" if the Work Environment Authority's regulations had been followed. Fredrik Lindgren says he does not want to speculate on what could have been done to avoid the accident.

Lindgren emphasizes that several measures are being taken to strengthen security. This includes physical measures such as lighting, railings, and safety signs, as well as developing routines to strengthen the safety culture and training employees in high-risk situations.

The opera is facing a comprehensive renovation, which can result in a massive rent increase for the operation.

How will this fine affect the opera's economic situation?

The accident occurred in September 2023 and was reported to the police by the Work Environment Authority. According to the authority, the accident would not have occurred if the opera had followed the work environment legislation.

The stagehand fell from a balcony, as he was forced to stretch over a railing and then lean down to tie up the drapes.
