The Minister: Trump's climate withdrawal can spread

It is obviously serious that the new President of the USA once again wants to leave the Paris Agreement, says Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari (The Liberals).

But this time, Europe and Sweden are better prepared and have an idea of how to move forward. The important thing is that the EU – and companies – stick to their climate work, she believes.

We also have many cooperation agreements with American states that will continue to actively work on climate transformation in the USA, says the Climate Minister.

At the UN's climate summits, it's usually difficult to reach an agreement, and the risk is that more countries will now leave the Paris Agreement.

There is absolutely a risk that other countries take inspiration from this step, says Pourmokhtari.

Trump's new environmental and climate policy is, however, much more than just leaving the Paris Agreement. It's about legislation that can be withdrawn, investments that won't happen, and the campaign slogan "drill, baby, drill" – to drill for more oil – should be put into action.

It's serious that they want to scale up the work on extracting fossil fuels. Instead, they should scale down and shift the money in another direction, says Pourmokhtari.
