Milorad Dodik, the former Bosnian Serb president who was ousted by the electoral authority last week, is spared from serving his prison sentence.

Dodik was president of Republika Srpska, the Serbian part of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

He was sentenced in February to one year in prison and a ban on holding political offices for six years. In early August, a higher instance upheld the verdict against Dodik.

But instead of the prison sentence, he will now pay a fine, announces a court in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The ban on holding political offices for six years and the dismissal as president, however, remains.

Dodik said before the verdict in early August that he will announce a referendum on whether he should accept the court's decision or not.
