France's president Emmanuel Macron acknowledges in a letter that France waged war in Cameroon during the end of the French colonial rule in the country at the end of the 1950s.

The letter was sent to Cameroon's president Paul Biya last month. It follows after an officially commissioned report on the matter and the conclusions were reached by an investigative committee in January this year.

In the report, it was established that France during the decolonization carried out mass relocations, put hundreds of thousands of Cameroonians in internment camps and supported brutal militias to suppress Cameroon's independence movement.

"It is up to me today to accept France's role in and responsibility for these actions", Macron writes in the letter.
