The Minister: Distance yourself from gangster rap

Minister for Labour Market and Integration Mats Persson (L) appeals to those in power within the cultural industry to clearly distance themselves from gangster rap, he writes on Aftonbladet Debate.

The Minister draws parallels to the 90s and he believes that the industry should distance itself in the same way as was done with the white power genre and "other expressions that undermine liberal democracy".

"If the right-wing extremist Ultima Thule had made high-quality music in the 90s, would the cultural establishment have given them awards and booked them for festivals? Probably not – and that's good", he writes.

Lately, festivals have been criticized for booking the artist Yasin, who has served prison time for preparation for kidnapping and for aggravated weapons offenses. Mats Persson writes that culture is free, but "not that it is free from responsibility".

"If you want to avoid criticism, you should instead take a clear stance against the romanticization of gang culture", he writes.

He writes simultaneously that "as a liberal, I think it's obvious that you should be allowed to write whatever music you want".

"Don't ban it – but don't give it a platform either", he concludes.
