The Minister for Housing and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner announced her decision to the room full of survivors and relatives of the Grenfell Tower on Wednesday, says the group Grenfell Next of Kin, which represents families, in a statement on X.
An investigation presented last year showed that the 72 deaths "could all have been avoided".
Both several governments and the construction industry, inspectors, and the fire department were responsible for "decades of mistakes" that led to the major fire, according to the investigation.
Since then, victims and relatives have criticized the British government for not implementing fire safety recommendations quickly enough.
In the night of June 14, 2017, a fridge and freezer on a low floor caught fire. The fire department was quickly on the scene, but still couldn't prevent the fire from spreading to the facade – and from there, it spread rapidly upwards. Many of the 400-600 tenants barely escaped.
The facade panels installed during a renovation in the mid-2010s were quickly identified as crucial for the fire's rapid progress. Similar panels have also been used on hundreds of other British buildings.
