Among them is the actor Kyle MacLachlan, who played special agent Dale Cooper in the TV series "Twin Peaks" and the lead role Jeffrey Beaumont in the film "Blue Velvet". In a long tribute to the director on social media, he thanks him for his entire career.
"Our friendship blossomed during "Blue Velvet" and then "Twin Peaks" and I always thought he was the most authentically living person I've ever met", writes Kyle MacLachlan on Instagram.
Naomi Watts, who played the lead role in Lynch's film "Mulholland Drive", also thanks him for her career.
"It was he who put me on the map", she writes on her social media.
"My heart is broken. My friend Dave... The world will not be the same without him", continues Naomi Watts.
Nicolas Cage played the lead role in Lynch's film "Wild at heart" from 1990.
"David was an outstanding genius in film, one of the greatest artists of this or any time. He was brave, radiant, and a lone wolf with a happy humor. I've never had more fun on a film set than when I worked with David Lynch", he writes to The Los Angeles Times.
David Lynch was Oscar-nominated four times, awarded a honorary Oscar in 2019 for his lifetime achievement, and won the Golden Palm in 1990 at the Cannes Film Festival for "Wild at heart".
David Lynch was 78 years old.
