Israel and Lebanon agreed on November 27 last year on a ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Shia militia Hezbollah. As part of the agreement, Lebanon's regular but relatively weak army would place forces in the south, where they would maintain peace together with international UN forces.
Hezbollah would withdraw northwards, north of the Litani River and further away from Israel, while Israel would withdraw from Lebanon's southern parts. The deadline expired on January 26.
