The disconnection was completed at 8 am on Saturday, according to Lithuania's energy authorities.
"We are entering a new phase – where we build a bright, strong, secure and energy-independent future," says Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas on X.
The connection to the central European power grid is scheduled to take place on Sunday, via Poland.
Since Russia's large-scale war against Ukraine began, all electricity trade with the country has been discontinued. However, the power grids have continued to be connected to maintain stability in the network.
The countries are the last in Europe to be connected to an old Soviet power grid leading to Russia, the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, and Belarus. Russia has also been responsible for the operation.
When the old cables are disconnected, the networks will be connected to the large, interconnected European power grid. Cables will be laid partly overland to Poland and partly under the sea to, among other places, Sweden.
Until Sunday's connection via Poland, the Baltic countries will temporarily be an electrical island. However, the major submarine cable Nordbalt, between the east coast of Småland and Klaipéda in Lithuania, can contribute to extra stability.
