The trial against Alec Baldwin is paused. According to the news agency AP, the judge is considering the defense's request to drop the charges due to several question marks regarding the disputed ammunition.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer sent the jury home on Friday after an interrogation raised further questions and she requested more witness statements.
It was during Thursday's hearing of crime scene technician Marissa Poppell that Baldwin's lawyer Alex Spiro hinted that Poppell and other authorities had been overly "soft" in their interrogations with the film's firearms supplier Seth Kenney and had not sufficiently investigated the possibility that he might be responsible for the deadly ammunition reaching the set.
It was in October 2021 that Baldwin fired a shot that killed photographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza during the filming of the movie "Rust". The gun, which was supposed to be loaded with blanks, turned out to be live. Alec Baldwin, who is charged with manslaughter, denies any wrongdoing.
If the 66-year-old Baldwin is convicted, he also risks 18 months in prison.
