Already last year, information emerged that talks were underway about a prisoner exchange, but the news that it has been carried out comes now, after USA's President Joe Biden has handed over the presidential post in the USA to Donald Trump.
"An Afghan soldier, Khan Mohammad, imprisoned in America has been released in exchange for a US citizen and has returned to the country", writes the Taliban's Foreign Ministry in a statement where it appears that the man had served a life sentence in California after being arrested "nearly two decades ago" in Afghanistan.
The Taliban regime's spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid states that two American citizens have been released but refuses to provide further details about the exchange.
In July last year, the Taliban authorities reported that two American prisoners were being held in Afghanistan and that discussions about an exchange were underway.
The extremist Taliban regime, which regained power in Afghanistan in 2021, has not been recognized by any country.
