The Swedish Olympic athlete Oskar Edlund was sentenced to day fines for minor drug offenses in December, writes Expressen.
I'm extremely ashamed, he says.
The 21-year-old hurdler, who is set to compete in the OS in Paris, was caught with cocaine in his blood during a night out in Stockholm. He tells the newspaper about the verdict:
It was a party night when the season was over. I was offered to try cocaine, which I stupidly did, he says.
Edlund says he didn't initially tell either the Swedish Athletics Federation or the Swedish Olympic Committee.
It was only now that they found out and I haven't had much communication with them since then... but it's clear that they don't condone my use of drugs.
Sweden's team captain Kajsa Bergqvist comments on the verdict:
We take this very seriously. As elite athletes, it's important to understand that you're a role model and here he has failed. Oskar is very remorseful and my task now is to take care of him both as an athlete and as a person, she tells Expressen.
According to Sweden's team manager Peter Reinebo, Edlund will not be punished.
