Verstappen took over the lead from World Championship leader Oscar Piastri already on the opening lap and could then hold it all the way to the finish, just ahead of the McLaren driver.
The victory was long-awaited for Verstappen, who has not had the dominant start to the season that he is used to. The 27-year-old has only won two races so far this season, the last one in the middle of May at the Emilia-Romagna GP, and none of the previous two sprints. He is therefore third in the World Championship standings, behind the McLaren duo Piastri and Lando Norris.
I couldn't afford to make any big mistakes, I'm glad I could keep them behind me, says Verstappen after the race.
