Elina Widerström's Dive Miss Costs Her World Championship Final Spot

A missed dive ruined the World Championship final on the one-meter springboard for last year's European Championship gold medalist Elina Widerström. I am disappointed, it was a gamble, it is a new dive that I have not done so much, says Widerström in tears after becoming second to last, eleventh, in Singapore.

She does not regret her attempt, however.

If you are going to get up and fight, you must almost have that hope and sometime be the first, says the Malmö jumper who studies and trains at the University of Minnesota in the USA.

Widerström was ninth after her two first jumps with a chance to climb in a tight result list.

But after the miss, the chances of a good placement were gone.

Widerström was twelfth in the World Championship in Doha last year, but has since then won gold in the European Championship last year and silver this year on the one-meter springboard.

She has both the three-meter springboard and synchronized diving left on the program in the World Championship. And a Saturday evening with depression.

I will hug my parents and then it's just a matter of reloading, she says.

Maddison Keeney, Australia, took the gold with 308 points ahead of Li Yajie who had 290.25.

Widerström got 234.60 points.

Nina Janmyr was eliminated in the qualifying round.

Olympic Games diver Emilia Nilsson Garip has taken a sabbatical year and is absent from the World Championship.
