The Frenchman, who trains in the USA under demonstration coach Bob Bowman, has removed two of his Olympic Games gold medals in Singapore, 200 meters breast and 200 meters butterfly.
Instead, he focuses solely on 200 and 400 meters medley, also gold medals in Paris.
On 400 meters medley, he holds the world record himself, on half the distance he is chasing American Ryan Lochte's record from 2011, 1.54,00.
Marchand was a meager six hundredths away in Paris last year.
But he promises no record, at a press conference in Singapore, he formulates it like this:
I want to be close to my personal records in all events and of course break world records in the coming years. I still have a lot to do in swimming.
He is asked how life has changed after becoming a national hero last year and if it has only been positive.
It has been good and bad. My life in France has changed a lot. I have to plan things, I cannot just go out and buy bread or something. But I have gotten used to it, become better at handling it and saying no to things. It has been different, but also good, he says and adds with a smile:
But it gets calmer when I am not in France, I must say.
