Sweden has 20 deaths per million inhabitants for 2024, compared to 22 the year before. Next in line is Malta with 21 and Denmark with 24. At the bottom of the list are Bulgaria and Romania with 74 and 77 deaths per million inhabitants, respectively.
In total, 44 people per million inhabitants died in traffic in the EU in 2024, three percent fewer than the year before.
"A step in the right direction, but not enough," writes Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas in a press release.
According to preliminary figures from the Transport Agency, 210 people died in road traffic in Sweden during 2024.
