Sweden may change its aid after USA's announcement

The Government may come to reprioritize aid to the surrounding world if it turns out that the USA's planned cuts in its aid hit too hard on areas that are important to Sweden, says Minister for Development Cooperation Benjamin Dousa (The Moderate Party) to Sveriges Radio Ekot.

I usually refrain from reviewing other countries' aid policies, but can mostly conclude that it will have devastating consequences in several areas, not least in health, vaccines, and other medicines, women's and girls' rights around the world, access to safe abortions, says Dousa.

The Minister for Development Cooperation further states that it is difficult to draw conclusions since it is hard to get in touch with the American aid agency USAID.

The US government announced on Thursday that over 90 percent of all contracts with USAID will be terminated. The value of the contracts is estimated to be equivalent to approximately 640 billion kronor.
