Struggle for Power in Congress

The presidential election is decided and Trump's party, the Republicans, have taken back the majority in the Senate. But the battle for the House of Representatives is not over – it may take days, maybe weeks, until a result is clear.

It is a last straw that remains for the Democrats – to succeed in stopping a clear Republican dominance in both chambers of Congress.

If the Republicans gain a clear majority in the House of Representatives as well, it is triple bingo for Trump and gives him unprecedented opportunities to drive through his agenda.

This is also in a party where Trump critics have been forced out or voted away, a party devoutly loyal to the incoming president compared to how it was during Trump's first term in the White House.

We have an unprecedented and strong mandate, Trump said on election night about the results in the presidential election and the Senate.

About Four

But it is a tough struggle for the seats in the House of Representatives, the result may be delayed, and it can still be a very narrow majority for whoever wins.

It is, simplified, about which way four of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives go. A majority requires 218 seats. Before the election, the Republicans had 220 and the Democrats 212, and three were vacant due to members leaving their seats.

The Republicans are ready to jointly lead the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives, said House Speaker Mike Johnson after Trump's election victory and the party's sweep in the Senate.

Trump Thinks "Big"

According to Johnson, there is an ambitious agenda for the first 100 days that the party and Trump have drawn up. And Trump thinks "big" and about making an impact, according to Johnson.

The Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, has not given up hope of tipping the majority. There are tough and even battles for a number of mandates in California, likely, which can decide in the end.

Every vote must be counted, says Jeffries.

On Thursday morning, Swedish time, the outcome was still uncertain for 38 mandates, the Republicans had then secured 206 seats and the Democrats 191.

Congress is the federal legislative assembly in the USA with its seat in the Capitol in the capital Washington DC. Its work runs in two-year periods, the ongoing 118th Congress meeting started on January 3, 2023. On November 5, members will be elected to the 119th meeting.

Congress consists of the Senate with 100 members, two from each state, and the House of Representatives with 435 seats, distributed in relation to the states' population.

In the Republican-led House of Representatives, there are currently 220 Republicans and 212 Democrats. Three seats are vacant. The even situation and the division within each party make it difficult to get through legislative and budget proposals.

In the Senate, the Democrats had a majority with 47 seats and the support of four independent members. The Republicans had 49 members.

With the election, the majority has gone over to the Republicans. But the distribution of mandates is not clear.
