Prosecutors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo demand the death penalty for the former president Joseph Kabila, indicted for war crimes, murder and rape.

Kabila led the country for nearly 20 years but lost the election in 2019. During the years after his time in power, information has emerged about possible links to the Rwanda-backed M23. The militia group is accused of several serious crimes in Congo-Kinshasa recently, including a massacre of mainly Hutus this summer.

Kabila himself is not present at the trial, where he is located is unclear. His supporters believe that the trial is politically motivated.

No date has been announced for the verdict.
