Almost half of all flights to and from Brussels on Monday are cancelled and all departures from Charleroi are stopped from the afternoon.
The reason is the national strike in Belgium, which also results in closed schools in the northern part of the country and severe restrictions on train and subway traffic.
The organizers expect around ten thousand participants in a larger demonstration in Brussels – which, ironically, has been delayed due to the difficulties of traveling in the city.
Belgium is still waiting for the country's parties to agree on a new government after the parliamentary election in June last year. Attempts to reach a broad agreement under the Flemish nationalist leader Bart De Wever have so far been unsuccessful due to disagreements on, among other things, tax policy.
