It was previously clear that Finnish Espoo and Lithuania's capital Vilnius would be two of the host cities in the European Championship 2027. On Thursday, the European basketball federation, Fiba Europe, made the decision that Stockholm and Belgian Antwerp would complete the host quartet.
There is jubilation from the blue-yellow side after the historic announcement.
Just being clear for the European Championship a year in advance is huge, and getting to play on home soil is a dream come true, says Klara Lundquist.
It means a lot for basketball in Sweden and for women's sports in general. Being able to inspire the younger generation, had I been younger, it would have been a dream to be able to see a championship like this live.
Susanne Jidesten, chairperson of the Swedish Basketball Federation:
It's incredible how long it's been since we hosted a European Championship overall. It was 20 years ago. So we're super thrilled. We're a sport that's growing and we're getting a lot of attention now, she says.
That we're going to play in the European Championship 2025 and are already clear for the European Championship 2027 for our women is fantastically fun.
Sweden and Stockholm will host one of the four groups in the group stage. The matches will be played in the Avicii arena, which will soon reopen after a major renovation. The European Championship will take place from 16 to 27 June 2027.
Sverige has never hosted a European Championship on the women's side before. On the men's side, Sweden was the sole host country in the basketball European Championship 2003.
