Belarus and Germany are holding "consultations" about a German citizen who, under unclear circumstances, is said to have been sentenced to death in a court in Minsk, announces the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.
The 30-year-old man is said to have been sentenced in June, accused of, among other things, "terrorism", according to the Belarusian human rights organization Vjasna. The case has not been commented on in detail from an official standpoint.
"After a request from the German Foreign Ministry, Belarus has come up with concrete proposals on how the case can be moved forward", says Anatoly Glaz, spokesperson for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.
Germany "is in intensive contact with Belarusian authorities" on behalf of the man, says a source at the Foreign Ministry in Berlin to the news agency AFP.
"The death penalty is a cruel and inhumane form of punishment that Germany opposes under any circumstances", adds the source.
